What is the Blue & Gold?

Blue and Gold celebrations are a tradition in Cub Scout packs. They celebrate the anniversary of the founding of Scouting America on February 8, 1910, and therefore often take place in February.

Our Pack saves our Blue & Gold until May, when it serves as our end-of-year celebration. We recognize our Leaders. We award the Pinewood Derby trophies. We have Mr. Fury blow things up.

2023 Blue & Gold

We award each Scout new rank badges, which they’ve been working on all year. Lions become Tigers, Tigers become Wolves, Wolves become Bears, Bears become Webelos, and Webelos become Arrows of Light. Their parents remove their old neckerchiefs and replace them with their new neckerchiefs.

Some of our current Arrow of Light Scouts when they moved from Bears up to Webelos Scouts

And then, the peak of the ceremony: Our current Arrow of Light Scouts “graduate” Cub Scouts and move on to become members of Scouts BSA.

First, they will be awarded the highest award in Cub Scouts: The Arrow of Light award.

Then, they take part in a “bridging over” ceremony. On one side of the bridge, their Cub Scout neckerchiefs and shoulder loops are removed by their Pack leaders, and they cross to the Troop, where they receive their new neckerchief, shoulder loops, and hat. This is the last time they will be Cub Scouts, the last time we will see them on a Friday night (unless some come back to serve as Den Chiefs, which some surely will!).

RJ leaves Cub Scouts and becomes a member of Scouts BSA

This year, we will be bidding farewell to:

  • Ezra W.
  • Jake G.
  • John D.
  • Julian S.
  • Sawyer M.

It is a fun, moving, bittersweet, and important night. There is a slideshow with photos from our adventures and activities this year. Good food is brought in from a caterer. There are cupcakes and a special cake that always seems to meet its demise at the hands of Mr. Fury.

Oh Fury

It is the culmination and celebrateion of the whole year, and I hope you and your family will join us!

Who is invited?

We would love to celebrate with the whole family — siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles… all are welcome!

How much does it cost?

We have a multi-tiered pricing system: Cub Scouts are $16 each, their siblings and other youth who are not Scouts are $18, and adults are $20. Children under the age of six are free.

Should I bring anything?

Yes — a LOT of enthusiasm and cheer! This celebration is fully catered and is managed by our Leaders. All we ask is you show up and you go home with tired hands from all of the clapping.

We Always Need More Help

Our Pack should have a Den Leader and two Assistant Den Leaders for every Den. We should have a Committee of around ten people, each with a specific focus. We do not have that kind of support. Yet. Help make a difference. The Pack will pay your registration fees; we just need you to answer the call.
