The scouts of the 21st Ward spread out very early on Saturday Nov. 18 to collect bags full of food donations for Scouting for Food. The scouts had put out bags the week before kicking off the 29th year of this annual event. The Fifth District police department again donated the use of their warm training room for our collections. Together we were able to collect over 6200 nonperishable items that went to Philabundance as well as other local food banks. The scouts were represented by Troop 114 sponsored by Community Bible Fellowship (next to Bob’s diner), Troop and Pack 334 sponsored by Leverington Church at Ridge & Hermitage, Troop 474 sponsored by IHM which operates out of the Scout House on Henry & Wigard Ave, and Girl Scout Troop 9226 sponsored by Leverington Church at Ridge & Hermitage. In a time when charitable food needs are higher than ever in Philadelphia and our own little community and without the media support from previous years, it was a successful operation. If you are interested in learning more about these scout programs or helping to expand this program to its old glory next year you are encouraged to contact Northern District Scouting for Food Chairman David Craighead at [email protected].
