Annual Parent & Scout Canoe Trip

Troop 334’s canoe trip is one of our longest-running traditions — a full day on the rivers of Wharton State Forest in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. We rent through Mick’s Canoe Rental, the closest livery to the Wading and Oswego Rivers, with decades of experience running Scout and family groups on the water.
Each rental includes transportation from Mick’s parking lot to the river put-in and back, paddles, and life vests. The rivers wind through towering Pitch Pines and quiet backcountry — expect wildlife, sandy banks, and good stretches to swim or take a break. Trips typically run 3 to 5 hours on the water.
We will be driving to Mick’s together as a unit, departing from Leverington Church. Departure time and carpool details will be sent closer to the date.
What to Bring
Pack everything in a waterproof dry bag — this is not optional. Canoes tip, and anything loose in the boat is a candidate for a swim. The river is forgiving, but your phone, wallet, and lunch are not.
Your gear should include:
- Clothes and shoes you are fully prepared to get wet (no exceptions)
- Change of clothes and a towel for the ride home
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- Sunglasses (secured with a strap if possible)
- Wide-brimmed hat
- Water and lunch
- Any medications needed for the day (in a waterproof case)
Anything you are not wearing or using should be in the waterproof bag, secured (tied) to your canoe. Leave valuables, electronics, and anything irreplaceable at home or in your car at Mick’s. We mean it.
Pricing & Registration
A $40 deposit per person is due by Monday, May 5 and must be brought in as cash or check — electronic payment is not yet available through the Troop.
The balance will be confirmed once Mick’s finalizes their 2026 pricing. Based on recent years, expect approximately $82 per person total, with your deposit applied. We will communicate the balance and final payment deadline as soon as it is available.
