ABOUT US
Some kids avoid obstacles. Our Scouts overcome them.
Roxborough’s Scouts
Girls & Boys, from Kindergarten until age 18, meeting weekly at Leverington Church across from Gorgas Park.
Cub Scout Pack 334, founded in 1991, and Scouts BSA Troop 334, founded in 1943, are long-standing, highly recognized Scouting America units in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA.
The life lessons learned in Scouting form a foundation to embrace opportunity and overcome obstacles in life. We work hard to develop a program that includes:
- A fun and safe environment, accessible to all interested children, to learn and grow while developing interests and skills
- Character building and development centered around good morals and values
- The chance to learn life skills that help Scouts be successful adults and contributing members of society
- Exciting outdoor experiences young people love like hiking, camping, mountain biking, and more
Our Culture
The culture in our Cub Scout Pack and our Scouts BSA Troop has been developed over the last 80 years.
First, we are committed to meeting each youth where they are and crafting a program that works for them. To the best of our abilities and within the scope of the Scouting program, we aim to facilitate a space where ANY youth can be a Scout and participate fully in the entire program.
Second, we believe Scouts should be an outdoor program. We meet indoors once a week, but we also try to have a camping trip or a hike each month. And when the weather is cooperating, we will move meetings outdoors if it makes sense. Safety is always our first concern with any part of our program.
What We Believe:

A Scout is:
- Trustworthy

Scout Oath
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty To God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

- Be clean in my outdoor manners
- Be careful with fire
- Be considerate in the outdoors
- Be conservation minded
How Scouting Works
Scouting is a year-round program uniquely designed to meet the needs of young people and their families.
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

The Scouting program is delivered through local civic, faith-based, and educational institutions called chartered organizations, which operate Scouting units to deliver the programs to their youth members, as well as the community at large. These units are run by almost one million adult volunteers dedicated to helping youth learn and grow.
Cub Scouts
Motto: Do Your Best!
In 2018, Cub Scouts Cub Scouts welcomed girls into the program, allowing girls and boys in grades K to 5 to join the program.
Cub Scouts is a program where youth develop the foundations for leadership, citizenship, and personal fitness through fun activities involving parents and legal guardians. Each Cub Scout is assigned to a Den, organized by grade, and led by an adult Den Leader.
Cub Scouting activities are designed for Scouting families to get in on the fun, and include exploring the outdoors, building projects, making friends, and developing a lifelong love of learning as Cub Scouts earn patches related to their grades.
Based on different topics such as hiking, nature, science, citizenship, first aid, sports, and more, adventures are earned as a Cub Scout advances toward their badge of rank. Once an adventure is completed, a Cub Scout receives recognition in the form of an adventure loop or adventure pin.
Cub Scouts in Pack 334 meet once a week, on Fridays at 7 pm, from September to May.
Scouts BSA
Motto: Be Prepared!
The Boy Scout program changed its name in February 2019 to Scouts BSA, allowing boys and girls ages 11-17 to join the program and pursue the highest rank of Eagle Scout
The traditional Scouting program, Scouts BSA is where youth develop outdoor survival skills, self-confidence, and ethics through youth-planned activities with increased attention to service, community engagement, and leadership.
Scouts BSA is where youth explore their interests and develop skills by participating in outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and canoeing. Scouts earn merit badges along the journey and work towards achieving Scouting’s highest rank—Eagle Scout.
Elected youth lead their troop and run the meetings at the guidance of the Scoutmaster and other adult leaders. Unlike Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA is a youth program planned mainly by the Scouts, not the parents.
Scouts BSA in Troop 334 meet once a week, on Mondays at 7 pm, from September to May.
Our Volunteer Leaders
Volunteering is the bedrock of the Scouting program. Behind every trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind Scout is a long line of committed volunteers who share those same traits.
Pack 334 and Troop 334 are blessed with dedicated adult involvement.
Cub Scout Leaders
Adrian Hoppel, who joined Troop 334 in 1985 and earned his Eagle Scout in 1992, has been a Cub Scout Den Leader since 2013 and became our Cubmaster in 2019.
He was preceded in this position by Jeff Wong, who joined Troop 334 in 1970, earned his Eagle Scout in 1979, served as Cubmaster for 15 years, and currently serves as Pack Treasurer and Assistant Scoutmaster for the Troop.
Fury Colubriale has served as the Assistant Cubmaster for both Jeff and Adrian and specializes in making the Pinewood Derby and the Blue & Gold magical.
Scouts BSA Leaders
David Craighead, who joined Troop 334 in 1974 and earned his Eagle Scout in 1981, became our Scoutmaster in 1998 — only our 6th Scoutmaster in over 75 years.
His right hand in running the Troop is Bill Dunn, who joined Troop 334 in 1983, earned his Eagle Scout in 1990, and has been the primary Assistant Scoutmaster since 1991. Bill has also been on the Cub Scout Pack Committee since 1994 and has served as the Cub Scout Pack Committee Chair since 2014.
About Our Cub Scout Pack and Scouts BSA Troop
It is not uncommon to find second and third-generation members of Troop 334, nor is it uncommon to have the Troop number recognized by Scouting groups across the country. We have a rich heritage, incredible stability, and a proven track record of excellence. Our legacy is borne on the chests of the many, many Eagle Scouts we have helped prepare over the years, and is echoed in their continued contributions to our community and nation.
Cub Scout Pack 334 and Scouts BSA Troop 334 are chartered by Leverington Presbyterian Church, located on Ridge Avenue, across from Gorgas Park between Hermitage and Gates Streets, in the heart of the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA.
Leverington Presbyterian was established in 1869 and has long been a bedrock and foundational neighborhood church, committed to its faith as well as to Roxborough and the City of Philadelphia. The church became our home in 2003, and we are proud to be chartered by such a historic and significant organization.

Founding and Location
The troop was founded on April 31, 1943, at St. Albans Episcopal Church at Ridge and Fairthorne Ave. under the guidance of Doc Christy. In 1962 St. Albans felt that they had no ties to the organization asked them to relocate and released the Troop number to them.
At that time a member of the Troop, George (the future uncle of member Bob Texter, Sr.), was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church at 520 Livezey Lane and helped coordinate a move. In 1963, Troop 334 officially transferred their number to Epiphany Lutheran Church. The Troop stayed with Epiphany into the new century.
In 2002 Epiphany decided to move and informed the troop of their plans. The leadership of both Troop 334 and the church agreed that it was in the best interest of both parties that we go our separate ways. Epiphany released the number to the Troop, and for the second time in its history, the troop was in search of a new home.
After making inquiries at several locations, the scoutmaster found two possible locations and turned it over to a committee to investigate and make a report to the leadership committee. They recommended that Troop 334 relocate to Leverington Presbyterian Church at Ridge and Hermitage St., and in the spring of 2003, the Troop Committee adopted the investigative committee’s recommendations. During the spring and summer, the two churches and the Troop took the necessary steps to make the transfer complete, including Leverington releasing the Troop number that they still held for their defunct Troop (215) which had folded in the early 70’s. One week after the Troops specialty summer camp trip to Boston they packed up the Troops belongings at Epiphany and moved down the Ridge.
At 12:01 am on Sept. 1, 2003, Troop 334 officially transferred over to Leverington Presbyterian Church.
Cub Scout Pack 334, for youth in grades K-5, meets every Friday at 7:00 pm.; Scouts BSA Troop 334, for youth 11-17 years old, meets every Monday at 7:30 pm.
